For as many years as I can remember, the Eddie Soens has always been a cold, windy day. Aintree is very exposed and there is absolutely no shelter from the wind. This time it was completely different. A cold day as to be expected, but really sunny without a breath of wind.
Sounds too good to be true? Well yes it is. See the picture (left).
Arrived early as always, to find half an inch of snow on the ground.
This is the finishing straight. Although it doesn't show up all that well, there is a heavy mist just rising above the ground.
Can't think why the race was cancelled!
I had only just washed and polished the van. It still looks nice and clean in this picture (right), but it was getting quite filthy from all the muck on the motorway.
You should have seen it when I got home.
Just behind is Peter Miller's vehicle which brought the barriers and podium etc.
Trevor joined me at Aintree hoping for a bit of a refresher on the photofinish setup. His car's behind Pete's van.

This would have been the final bend (above left), and I still think it would have made for an interesting race. Underneath the snow was a sheet of ice.
And just to prove that we were indeed at Aintree, the shot on the right above is of the famous racecourse grandstands. Not long now to the Grand National. |
