Rogues Gallery

There's bound to be complaints if I started this page with someone other than myself, so here it is!

Me (left) behind the big motors. It's pretty poor quality in spite of scanning the negative and enhancing it as best I could. I reckon that this picture was taken around 1971, because the motor looks like one of those built for the Worlds at Leicester in 1970.

Britain had no big motors until Manchester official Jim Paterson started constructing them during the 1960s. Jim used to buy old motor bikes and modify them for pacing.

The bikes were Class B motors which differed in size from the UCI recognised Class A machines. It was behind a Class B that I first started motor paced racing. For the 1970 Worlds, the BCF had new bikes built to UCI specifications. After the championships they were taken to Manchester and we used them at Fallowfield where this picture was taken. When I stopped racing I did a bit of pacing, but I can't find a picture showing that. Those were the days.

In racing mode, our own Tom Newman (above left) looking very dynamic on the other end of the camera lens, whilst to his right is a picture of BC President Brian Cookson, captured in an evening race at Colne in 2005. I used to race with Brian in our younger days when he won the old Lakeland Division road championships.

Pictured racing above is former leader Bob Barber captured by the photofinish camera at Welwyn during one of the scratch events in the National Masters Track Championships. Enjoying a cyclo-cross event in Mallory Park is the 'Man-in-Charge', Brian Furness. If you come out to our races in the summer Brian, you won't need all that cold weather clobber.

Guest Rogue, Knocker (left) who ran the photofinish at Eastway.

Knocker says of this picture "I forget how many layers I had on, It might look sunny but boy was it cold that day."

On the right is British Cycling's snapper caught in the act by our own Resident Snapper, Bob Pinkerton.

Yes, it's Larry at Mallory Park early in 2005. I often wondered what he keeps in the cool box which goes everywhere with him. It's his camera equipment.

Note the upside down number!

Another old'un from my archive (left).

This group of young Manchester Wheelers club riders in 1967 includes our own Trevor Jones (3rd from the right at the front).

Also here is Tony O'Brien from the Velodrome in Manchester, shown 3rd from the right at the back (partly hidden, but you can just see the shades!).

Getting a grandstand view is the latest addition to our Technical Services Team, Pete Sutton seen here at the Tour of the Reservoir in Northumberland.

Pete, they're coming the other way mate!!

Caught him when he wasn't looking (left).

This is Bill at Blackpool when he came down again to fill in for us.

Now then. On occasion, I have been asked/told to take charge of the lap board at race finishes. I make a point of refusing. One event which will remain anonymous sticks in my mind.

Letting the side down is John Pearson (right) who is clearly multi-tasking with the lap board in his left hand and Lynx capture button in his right.

For this reason he deserves his place in Rogues Gallery. Thanks for the photo Pete.

And......he has no socks on!!!

The Tour of Ireland 2009, and all the stars want to meet Kannan. On the left is Irish cycling legend Sean Kelly, part sponsor this year of the An Post - Sean Kelly Team.

Above - who's that with the great man? Why, it's Lance Armstrong.

Between them, these three have won 7 Tours de France and 4 green jerseys in the Tour, plus many other classic races!

Now this fella is a rogue (left).

Neutral service driver Tony Barry seen issuing threats to the photofinish man in Leazes Park, Newcastle.

Not visible here is his henchman Don Povall, laughing his head off in the passenger seat.
