Herne Hill Good Friday Meetings 2003/2005

The Good Friday Meeting at Herne Hill in London is a regular event for BC Technical Services.

We provide both photofinish and timing facilities for the meeting, and over the years have taken quite a few pictures. Some of these have been included in the Omega Timing section. It's obviously difficult to take general racing photographs because we are working at the time, but here's a selection of photographs which attempt to show the atmosphere of this historic meeting.

Very little text, but the pictures should convey some idea of what the meeting is all about. I reckon it is one of the best single day track events in the country. Oh, by the way, I rode there as a kid many years ago! Look at the last picture - I used to ride a bike like that!

Now look at the next to last picture. I rode a bike like that when I finished racing! This selection of images was taken during the 2003 and 2005 meetings (no event was held in 2004). Most were taken by Tom Newman, with a few additions by me.

The Triumph Thunderbirds shown in the pictures below are owned by British Pacing. I recall that 'Big Motors' of days gone by were belt-driven in case a sudden engine failure caused the bike to stop suddenly. It also gave a smoother acceleration. Motors these days are chain-driven.

It's no wonder that seven of these monsters going across our track contacts for 75 laps may have given us timing problems!

Since I put this page online I managed to find the picture of me riding behind a big motor (see Rogues gallery). Somewhere there is one of me on the motor itself (with funny leathers and helmet). Can't find it at the moment, but I will keep looking.
