  • On lens, put auto/manual switch on manual and open aperture to 2.8.
  • Screw on mounting plate to underside of camera then insert into tripod.
  • Set mirror to look through lens.
  • Zoom to cover width of road.
  • Set vertical line to line up with finish line.
  • Set horizontal "M1" "M2" just above centre of road (note image is upside down).
  • Set focus ring.
  • Set aperture ring back and switch on auto clip.
  • Set mirror lever back.
  • Fit data lead to camera (must be cross-over).
  • Fit power lead (push in hard).
  • Switch on (should get power light).

2  Laptop

  • Plug in power and data leads
  • Plug capture lead into the correct USB port for that laptop.
  • Switch on, click on "Lynx" and open.
  • You should see a green % bar loading on the bottom right of screen.
  • If it will not load, check all connections and restart Lynx.
  • If it still will not load, phone the 'Expert'!
  • When the camera has loaded the screen will change with extra toolbar etc.
  • The AGC needs to be set at about 70 (on a scale of 0-150). This can be changed by adjusting the lens aperture buttons on the right-hand box.
  • The speed can be changed by clicking on the 'I' button on the left of the lower toolbar and going through the tabs to 'Input'.
  • When the finish is on a flat road and camera is near to edge of road, set to max 2000. If finish is uphill, it may need to be changed to something like 1800.
  • The direction of finish needs to be the right way. This can be changed from the 'I' tabs or from the picture screen.
  • When the riders are moving right to left, the screen should show 'left'.

3  Filming

  • A picture screen can be opened by clicking on the far left icon on the middle toolbar.
  • Press the capture button and you should see the first part of the film on screen.
  • Film some riders going past and click on the 'crop' icon in the lower toolbar to remove unused film.
  • Click on the enlarge icon to fill screen with picture and move bottom bar to look at whole film. You may also have to move the side bar to see whole of height.
  • Make any adjustments that are needed.
  • You can continue to film into this screen or a new one, but remember to close the first one by clicking on the lower 'X' top right.
  • The file can be saved or not as you wish.
  • If you save it, give it a name, i.e. '2 laps to finish' or 'leading bunch' so it can be found again.
  • The image can be changed before filming, darkness wise by clicking on the 'I' button and tab 'Input' and change brightness. Go up or down in 5s or 10s. The max is 60 but look out for whiteout where you can't see anything white because of the glare (from the sun on the riders numbers).
  • After filming the picture can be changed by clicking on the 'E' on the side bar and choose adjustment and alter as required.

4  Timing

  • This can be put onto a picture after the race has started. Click on the 'finger' icon on the top toolbar and you will be asked for the set (how long the race has been going). The space bar will start the clock. The time of day will be shown in the box next to next to the finger icon and if a film picture is open running time will show on the right in yellow running time box.
  • To get that time to show on the next film, click on the icon to the right of the start time and click on the right running time box.

5  The Finish

  • Check the AGC is about 70 just before the finish and film and save the bell lap.
  • After filming all the riders to finish, click 'crop'. This will cut out unused film and leave a dotted line.
  • Move to start and click on the front wheel of first rider and enter rider's race number. Click enter key and this should show in the results box on top right along with race time and delta time (time gap).
  • Continue until all riders are given a result. If you can't read a number try ?1, ?2, ?3 etc and ask the judge to sort out later.
  • There is an icon to remove a result, and a race time can be changed by hand for riders in the bunch at one lap.
  • If two riders are close, a 'close time' box will pop up, or if you try to put in the same rider twice, another box will pop up.
  • Reduce the size of film and check that each rider has a line against the front wheel.
  • Click on the gap icon and set to 1.000 sec.
  • This will give delta times on the result.
  • Print or give the result to the judges.
  • Save the film by clicking on the lower 'X' and give it a name.
  • If you need to look at the result again, click on File/Open and select the name of the race.
  • A list of riders can be put in the laptop before the start so that the results page will have rider's names, clubs. cats etc.
  • The list needs to be in .csv format, i.e.
  • 21,Bloggs,Fred,Wobbley Whs,4th
  • 34,Bloggs,Joe,Wobbley Whs,1VET
  • 2,Brown,John,Matlock CRC,2
  • Note - these do not need to be in number order.
  • From the above, save as Type=All files, click Lynx and open, change file to lynx.ppl.
  • Click 'Save' and 'Yes' to pop up box. Check that it has worked by clicking on rider in a film and check that he has right name.
