Situated on Burnley Road, opposite St. John's Church and next to Bacup Post Office, the Aged, Blind and Disabled Social Centre, known locally as 'The A, B and D Centre' dates from the 1890s when it was built as Bacup Liberal Club. Funding was provided by local businessman and benefactor James Maden Holt, who also owned the land on which it was built. The building continued in use as the Liberal Club until the 1960s. Currently providing a meeting place for local people with varying disabilities, the 'A, B and D' has provided a much-needed local service for many years. Although threatened with closure for much of 2003 due to local council cost-cutting initiatives, a new management committee was set up with the intention of extending the Centre's use and raising extra finance. It's still going strong today. |
