Fitzpatrick's on Bank Street in Rawtenstall is claimed to be the last Temperance Bar in England. The business was started in the 1890s as an alternative to pubs by a family of Irish herbalists, and at one time the Fitzpatrick's owned 24 such shops throughout Lancashire. With the passing of time the temperance movement declined, and the herbal health shops suffered likewise. The Rawtenstall shop is the sole survivor of a bygone era. |
